BIP324 is a proposed Bitcoin protocol upgrade that would encrypt P2P traffic between nodes to improve privacy and security. Currently, Bitcoin traffic is unencrypted, allowing surveillance and man-in-the-middle attacks. BIP324 encrypts traffic and adds randomness to obfuscate protocol use. For backwards compatibility, BIP324 is opt-in, with nodes falling back to plaintext if needed. The code was merged into Bitcoin Core on October 3, 2023, meaning it will be available in the next software release, allowing nodes to upgrade encrypted P2P connections.
Whatever happened to this? Do we have any stats showing of how many nodes are opting in? This seems like a huge deal. Thoughts?
