Eight years ago, Open Road Films partnered with GoCoin and MovieTickets.com to allow fans to use Bitcoin to buy tickets for the indie comedy "Dope," which was released on June 19, 2015. Moviegoers were able to use Bitcoin on MovieTickets.com at over 900 U.S. theaters, thanks to GoCoin's payment platform.

The film's plot cleverly integrates cryptocurrency. The main character, Malcolm, decides to sell stolen drugs online. Realizing that using traditional payment methods would raise suspicion, they opt to accept Bitcoin as payment for the drugs. This decision leads them into the world of cryptocurrency, highlighting the decentralized and relatively anonymous nature of Bitcoin transactions. Malcolm and his friends use their knowledge of technology and the dark web to facilitate the transactions. As the story unfolds, the use of crypto becomes a central plot point, showcasing how the characters navigate the world of digital currency as they try to turn their misadventure into an opportunity for financial gain.

At the time of the film's release, one Bitcoin was worth about $250, and each ticket was going for around $12, which was equivalent to 0.049 BTC. Today, that would be worth $1,300.
