My interest in crypto began in 2017. I remember trading and selling crypto until I had enough to stockpile all my cryptos (up to $70k) in the coinbase exchange. I was fine with leaving it there because Coinbase is a well-known established company. Up until not too long ago, I bought another chunk of BTC and studied more about the security of leaving crypto in an exchange. Then I had this feeling that I better move it to a wallet so my first thought was, why not move it to Coinbase Wallet? I moved my crypto there. Left it for about a couple weeks. That's when I studied more about the security of leaving crypto in a hot wallet, ESPECIALLY closed source wallets. So after freaking out a little bit, I decided to move it to something open source and in a cold storage. I chose Trezor because of their excellent reputation. It's a little daunting to use but I researched how to use Trezor until I had just enough knowledge and confidence. So I moved all my crypto there the experience wasn't too bad. They let you even verify if the seed works (which is super important). I never knew up until just now that hidden wallets exist which gives even more security because it's protected by a passphrase.
I'm SUPER happy that nothing went wrong. It's like every time I have to do stuff like this, something goes wrong, I miss an important step, etc. But here...nothing bad happened. If it not had been for some really knowledgeable people online, I would've likely have left my crypto in the exchange and who knows if things would've gotten ugly and my crypto ended up being seized or something.
Why does it feel liberating? Because I can officially say that all the crypto in that wallet is MINE. It's going to be with me for the rest of my days. I don't have to put my keys in some other place that I don't 100% know. No company in the world has more power over my crypto than me. The only shitty thing is that I now have to keep my seeds and passphrase somewhere safe and make sure to remember where they are but that's where the shitty part ends. It's so safe and secure that I think my crypto is in a better place than the savings bonds that I have on a government website.
