What are the worst mistakes you avoided while you've been using or trading crypto? As the season of hype and FOMO seems to be starting, it's worth thinking about narrow escapes and lessons learned in the past.
So what's the biggest mistake that you avoided? It could be a technical mistake, like transferring something from the wrong address or authorising a malicious smart contract. During the NFT craze I came so close to authorising a dodgy "airdrop" for what I thought was a household brand. The only thing that saved me was my hardware wallet wasn't with me - and by the time I went back later, I thought twice and realised it was a scam. A pretty obvious one. But my excitement had almost taken over earlier, and made me ifnore the red flags.
I had money in BlockFi for years, but when centralized exchanges were falling, I decided to self custody everything. I nearly didn't, because the withdrawal fees were high and I really didn't think BlockFi would be affected. Lesson learned there: pay the penalties, and listen to your instincts when it comes to self-custody. The costs of burying your head in the sand could be worse.
I've made some dumb mistakes too, but hopefully they are avoidable in the next cycle.
So what narrow misses or close calls have you had, and what have you learned from them?
