What’s right and what’s wrong: My response to Reddit wanting to turn every sub into a business.

Every platform that relies on its user base to provide content, should provide monetary incentive, or at least access to external incentives for its content creators. Look what happened to vine. With the exception of Twitter, Every top social media site offers compensation in proportion to engagement and ad revenue. Although Reddit as a platform functions and creates revenue from similar business practices as the field, it deviates from the “social media” archetype while remaining by definition a social media website. The biggest difference is that on Reddit (except for lurkers-shout out to them) everyone is both a content creator and a content consumer. To Reddit, the comment section is, if not more responsible for engagement than the posts themselves, equal to the original content (lol) posted. This means that in order to provide adequate compensation it has to be extended to to the entire user base. Que that orbiting rock above our heads we use as a reward in r/CryptoCurrency, the poster child of Reddit’s vision. (Avoiding using the M word to have this lengthy post removed). As a community incentive and separate form of karma, it works astounding. Some people have quite a heavy piggy bank as well, but if this is Reddit’s idea of a buisness, they are mocking cryptocurrency and us as the users right in our faces. Here’s why. There is no backing behind the M words. I’m not saying it doesn’t have value but the Value it holds is the sentiment in which the subs community awards it. Nothing more. It gains its monetary value on the secondary market. (This is nothing new for us speculative investors but) what is new is that Reddit as the company is claiming they are rewarding creators. They are quite frankly not. It is the community that is. It is manipulative and exploitive if it’s users. Personally I think compensation contradicts the very thing Reddit is, and if nothing changes Reddit will be flooded with shitposts and abandoned.
