One reason of course would just be because people don't want to take responsibility of their funds, but another reason that I have just begun to consider is that many won't be able to afford to use the base layer.
A majority of people will own less than 200,000 sats, and closing on the base layer could be too expensive. How will these people store their funds? Holding sats on the lightning network is not safe for life savings.
Will most people use banks or do you think something else? Perhaps side-chains like liquid could be useful for this. There would be faster and cheaper transactions on liquid, and instead of using one custodian, it is a federated model. Do you think federated models will be more popular?
