This is my very favorite story to tell, and I knew it was going to play out like this. I just didn't think it would happen this fast.
At the time I was working for a real estate brokerage. I was one of two inside sales agents. We cold called people and offered them home evaluations. I worked there from September 2022 - Decemeber 2022.
I was 22 he was 27 and he had a girlfriend and a baby.
I got the job because my other friend was a transaction manager at the real estate brokerage and referred me.
I only worked there for about 3 months. He would ask questions about what my interests were, and I told him I mainly liked investing. I didn't want to scare him right away by mentioning Bitcoin, soI started off by explaining to him the concepts of Roth IRA's and 401k's. I explained how the S&P 500 averaged returns of 10% per year ever since 1957. I explained how it's best to buy and hold and invest for the long term and not day trade because most professional day traders can't outperform the S&P500 over the long term.
He told me he was interested in beginning to invest because he had a kid to take care of.
He never really grasped the concept, nor did he ever act upon it. He always stayed in that "one day I'll do it" mentality. He was one of those people that would use the excuse of "I don't have enough money to invest" when in reality anyone can invest with $1.
As the weeks and month went along, I would explain Bitcoin. He heard about it and thought it was dangerously risky. This was after bitcoin dumped from 69k to 18k range. One day he asked how much money I put into Bitcoin. This is the question I've been waiting for him to ask all along. I told him "I actually put all my money into Bitcoin". and that I don't actually contribute to a Roth IRA anymore in favor of being all-in Bitcoin. I told him that everything I told him about the S&P 500, I do that with Bitcoin. Lump sum every check and hold it and never sell.
I remember his reaction so vividly. His demeanor switched up completely. His eyes switched up, facial expression, everything. He kind of did that "sigh laugh" type thing and nodded no as if it was the stupidest thing he ever heard. I loved that reaction because I knew it was going to age like wine.
Another time I remember I told him at the all time high I had $60,000 worth and his reaction said a lot about him. He said, "YOU HAD $60,000?!" super surprised and wide-eyed and everything. He thought $60,000 was a lot of money. I said yep, I cashed some out in November 2021 and bought my used Prius and the rest crashed down to 10k or whatever the remains were worth at the time. He made fun of me saying something along the lines of "all that investing and you got a used Prius out of it? hahaha" like I was the butt of the joke. The Prius was actually my dream car at the time because it was the #1 most fuel-efficient non-electric car at the time getting over 50 mpg.
In November 2022, the same day FTX went bankrupt, he showed me his phone and read the headline. That day, Bitcoin went to 15k. He said something along the lines of "I think it's all over man." I insisted that this was the biggest opportunity to buy. He said something like "Are you sure this space is safe man? I think it's going to keep going lower." I can't remember his exact words, but he was saying all the typical things that usually mark the bottom of the market.
He perfectly marked the bottom of the market that day. I told him "That is what the news wants you to think. According to history, this is the very best time to buy" I said exactly that. I told him this was the very best time to buy. I told him that when the news is trying to scare you away, it's because the elites want to get in at a lower price while retail stays on the sidelines to buy back at a higher price.
I continued to buy using my entire check. In December, I quit the job because the boss was being toxic toward me. Shortly after, I ended up getting a much better job right after that and continued to lump sum every single dollar into BTC throughout the entire 2023. I never skipped a single paycheck.
November 2022 was about 1.3 years ago. As we know today, Bitcoin is right around the all-time high.
Not too long ago, I saw him driving my old boss around (that was part of his job too. He was an inside sales agent AND the boss' driver). I texted him asking if that was him I just saw driving down the street. I asked him how things were and asked him how the other coworkers were. I didn't mention anything about Bitcoin or investing at all. I just wanted to know how they were doing. One of the things he mentioned to me was "yeah man, I'm still considering getting that Roth IRA started".
Yep, he's still on that "One day I'll do it mentality." Ever since I quit in December 2022, S&P500 returned over 35% the past year and Bitcoin has returned over 250%. Meanwhile he's still considering opening a Roth IRA. Next year maybe he'll be almost ready to open it up.
We are not even at 69k yet, but I am sitting with over $100,000 of Bitcoin now. I enjoy an amazing life and still drive the same reliable Prius. I eat amazing food every day, I wear very nice clothes, I buy conveniences to buy my time back, but most importantly, I still spend most of my check (90%+) to buy Bitcoin. He's still driving my old boss around getting yelled at, using all his money to take care of his kid and girlfriend. I made double/triple the amount of money sitting on my Bitcoin over the past year than he has waking up at 5 to get ready to drive at 6 so he can get to the boss' house (who's an hour away) by 7. Then they have to get to the office by 8 and work until 5. Drive the boss home and arrive at 6 and then drive back home by 7. He spends 8 hours in the office and 4 hours driving 5 days a week to make less than half of what I made sitting around holding my Bitcoin. And I don't even have to use any money to take care of any kids.
Let this be a lesson. Bitcoiners get richer over time while fiat holders get poorer over time. Also, you never want to say "one day I'll do it" or "I'll do it next week". Do it now. I'm just glad I'm in the position I am today. He thought $60,000 was a lot, and here I am with over $100,000 at 24. And I will never stop. Every single paycheck, I will lump sum into bitcoin. Doesn't matter if it's at 69k or 15k. I will hold through the 75% correction just like I did from 69k to 15k. I will always be buying.
