All Cryptocurrencies

TLDR: Rabobank noticed that I did sell some crypto currency. And now the Rabobank asks me to provide in-depth detail of my current crypto portfolio. Got some questions below, any advice is appreciated.

First some background info, to paint the picture; A couple of months ago I had some refurbishment done in my house. The guy who delivered all the goods had no card payment machine with him. The company told my upfront and I ensured that I had the amount of cash ready at hand. That week I transfered some crypto to my Rabobank account, and took the money out from the ATM. It was one withdrawal and the Max amount withdrawal per single withdrawal is 5000eu.

That made the shit hit the fan. My account got suspended shortly. In all fairness, I can understand why the automation flagged me. My phone broke that morning and I had to use my spare iPhone to login to the bank account and check the balance to see if the Crypto was payed out. The combo of a "New phone registration in the app", a crypto payment and a cash withdrawal raised some understandable flags. So, no complaints there.. I got a call from a bank employee, he requested some info and I explained that it was actually me doing the work and also explaining why it needed the cash.

My account got unsuspended, case closed. or not?

Fastforward 2 months later, I received a call from a CDD ( Customer Due Diligence ) Analyst from the Rabobank. I confirmed later that the call was legit. Lets call the CDD Analyst "Mr. B." from now.

Mr. B. wanted to let me know that the bank was tracking a couple of transactions from me. All the transactions are regarding euros being send to, or received from, crypto-known companies.

Mr B. explained that the Rabobank follows up because of WFT ( Wet Fianciele Toezicht, freely translated: Law Fiancial Supervision), and they want to learn who I am, what my needs are and how the Rabobank would be able to help me. All due to KYC (know your customer). Although I do not remember to ask for any help at all, Mr B explained that they want to know how many cryptocurrencies I have, and where do I store them. I needed to provide proof with screenshots from exchanges and/or wallets. I explained, after a good discussion, that I will not tell him this information, that I do not see any legal needs why I should explain anything to him.Mr B. ended the call by saying that this call was only a courtesy, and that I would receive the formal request shortly, which I did.

Let me sum up the questions:

  1. When did you start investing in cryptocurrencies?
  2. How high was the initial fund you started with?
  3. What was the source of the initial start fund?
  4. Which crypto platforms do you use to trade cryptocurrencies?
  5. Which cryptocurrencies do you own right now? Please specify per exchange?
  6. What is the current exact value of your entire crypto portfolio?
  7. Do you use other bank accounts, besides Rabobank, to buy and sell cryptocurrencies?
  8. Do you trade crypto currencies for a third party?
  9. Why did you needed the amount of cash?
  10. Do you expect more, larger, transactions in the future?

To be honest, my blood started to boil arround question number 2, and I couldnt see straight soon after... I am completely flabbergasted that a company has the balls to ask these kind of invasive questions. It is absolutely non of their bussiness.

Btw, before you ask; Yes, I did do my traxes properly, and no I do not have any shade bussiness going on. Im simply a Dad who tried to speculate and ended up investing some small amount.

Some questions:

  • Did any of you have experience on these kind of investigations?
  • I really dont want to answer question number 1 until 7. Do I have to ? ( 8 is a no-brainer and I've already answer 9 and 10 on the phone) Btw; I have nothing to hide, but I dont want to answer because I need see any legal reason why I should answer..
  • What comes next if i dont answer?

I've made up my mind on one thing, no more Rabobank. Ever. I've created bankaccounts with other banks and I will move all my financial bussiness to another bank. Luckily there are more "crypto-friendly" banks. Luckily we have a lot of in the EU.
