The point of it isn't to reduce gas fees, this is a step in the right direction and will make Ethereum more efficient in terms of energy. It will make L2s like the upcoming Polygon zkEVM much more efficient. Sharding is what is going to be reducing gas fees. With all that being said at least they are moving forward.
