Munchausen syndrome is a mental disorder where a patient fakes illness to gain attention and sympathy. Treatment aims to manage rather than cure the condition, but is rarely successful.
I've noticed an uptick of people making long posts on this sub Reddit, claiming to have been scammed, but when you read the account it's completely unbelievable/obviously fabricated.
I think a similar phenomenon to Munchausens is going on where people (usually lonely people) see the attention and sympathy scam victims get and make up a story of their own to garner similar attention and sympathy.
Ultimately it's very difficult to categorically tell a person is lying, especially if they claim to be too technologically illiterate to extract their public key or provide other means of proof.
Am I completely off base here?
