I keep on seeing articles about how governments want to ban bitcoin because it has allowed ransomware become a serious problem.
The real issue here is cybersecurity...all of these big companies don't want to spend the money to keep up to date with secure systems, and then cry once they get hit with an encryption virus. The truth is, all companies need to update their security massively, and ransomware is just highlighting this flaw.
This is especially true with the Gas pipeline ransomware issue. We need to protect our infrastructure from hackers and foreign governments, so they should feel lucky all the attackers wanted was money. We need to upgrade and secure all of our systems before the next big global conflict, because hackers are going to be on the forefront and ransomware is actually making us realize how vulnerable we really are.
Hospitals, government agencies, power grids, etc...all need to secure their weak points before the attackers do it with real malice, and don't want money, but just want to cause chaos and destruction. I wish the governments would look at the big picture instead of thinking bitcoin is somehow the enemy here...if these systems are that easy to compromise, imagine how much intel is silently being leaked to China/Russia/etc... every single day?
