Key Takeaways:

  • Anthony Boyle met Sam Bankman-Fried in prison before he was cast as the main character in The Altruists.
  • The eight-episode Netflix series is about the failure of FTX’s $8 billion, the crash of SBF and Caroline Ellison.
  • Bankman-Fried has received a 25-year prison term for fraud and conspiracy.

Since that time, the FTX drama is coming back into the limelight with Netflix’s new eight episode long drama, The Altruists. Prior to the 19 release in November, actor Anthony Boyle has indicated that he was speaking to the former FTX chief before being cast as an actor portraying him in the film.

Anthony Boyle Contacted SBF From Prison Before Filming

Boyle told Vanity Fair that he reached out to Bankman-Fried while researching the role and sent him more than 100 questions. Many of them answered them, but Boyle didn’t reveal anything because he had promised to keep the correspondence private, said the actor.

Instead of the mechanics, his interest lay in what propelled Bankman-Fried to its position. Boyle said he wanted to know what made somebody one of the youngest billionaires in the world and how ambition, ideology and ego influenced his decisions.

Netflix Focuses on SBF and Caroline Ellison

The Altruists cast Boyle as Altruist’s CEO Bankman-Fried, while Julia Garner plays Caroline Ellison, who was the CEO at Alameda Research.

According to Netflix, the two young idealists succeeded in changing the financial system before being caught up in an alleged $8 billion fraud. The series takes inspiration from New York magazine articles, and is set to premiere Nov. 19.

In contrast to a focus on the financial scandal of FTX, the trailer frames it as an empire and as a personal fascination of SBF and Ellison.

FTX’s Collapse Still Defines One of Crypto’s Biggest Frauds

In March 2024, he was convicted on seven criminal charges, including wire fraud, securities fraud conspiracy, commodities fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

He embezzled billions of dollars of FTX customer assets, defrauded investors of over $1.7 billion, and defrauded Alameda lenders of over $1.3 billion, U.S. prosecutors said. One of the more harmful happenings in crypto history, the FTX collapse is still notable, as the exchange was previously thought of as a big trading platform worldwide.

The Altruists Turns Crypto’s Biggest Scandal Into Character Drama

Instead of just showing Bankman-Fried as a disgraced crypto-entrepreneur, Boyle said the show’s focus is on his insecurity, anxiety, and belief in effective altruism. That way, Netflix has the freedom to look back on the collision between idealism, risk-taking and individual ambition within FTX.

Boyle also stressed that the story is not just about eccentric founders or tech culture. The real world financial effects of the collapse were suffered by customers and investors, with the drama intricately entangled in one of crypto’s most significant failures.
