Newbie basics

I am new to cryptocurrencies, i have some idea of what the blockchain means but I was wondering if you could store information in the blockchain that is different than just the transaction history of trading the coin (bitcoin or ethereum). For example if there is an associated real estate transaction can you store in the blockchain for ethereum the address of the real estate sold and paid for with ethereum? Could you create a digital title to property in the blockchain particularly in the ethereum blockchain?
