People who think banks should still be an option didn't live in a country where banks went in crisis.

I always see discussions even here about how banks should stay, or crypto and banks should co-exist. But in a mass adoption situation of crypto, I'd rather if banks ceased to exist.

In my country (Lebanon) Banks went in crisis after a mix of mass protests, COVID-19, and hyperinflation, explosion, etc. all happened in a mass corrupt country.

What I mean by "banks went in crisis" is that pretty much anyone who had money in banks just lost it all out of the blue. and there's nothing that can be done about it anymore.

We used to have a pretty stable currency for a long while, and in the country we used both our currency (LBP) and USD. and before crises there were a lot of ads and campaigns to give up USD, and be proud of our currency and to swap our USD to LBP, and open LBP bank accounts etc.

There also were some decent interest/tax rates as far as I knew. Then after all that, when the crises starting unfolding, banks started going on strikes and closing down conveniently right before hyperinflation strikes, and our LBP currency became pretty much worthless in comparison to what it was. Now the country started getting dollarized, and we are the most inflation country in the world.

Now that banks started re-opening, they are shamelessly advertising as if nothing happened. They didn't give anyone money back, or if they did, they gave it back in pre-inflation value.

Thankfully now almost no one trusts banks here anymore and are self storing their money. And because of all that, crypto here now gained some traction and is being somewhat adopted as a better alternative.

While yes, this case might not happen in most countries, but it is still possible to happen. and the idea that the bank can just vaporize your money at the best chance they get in some slight global crisis, then i don't know if it's worth trusting them. We should go with crypto instead, specifically self custody outside CEXs, especially if it gets mass adopted.
