Back in 2010, a software developer named Gavin Andersen (part of the Bitcoin dev team) wanted to promote mass adoption for Bitcoin.
Using the website freebitcoins.appspot.com he let users earn 5 BTC per day, simply for solving captcha.
During 2010, he gave away around 19K BTC. (I wonder how much he has left for himself. He's supposedly one of the top 50 richest crypto holders, so I guess that he left enough).
Back then, not many took it seriously, so, take the existing faucets seriously folks might be worth something in the future.
