I wanted to hear from those that play videos games, as the title says, would soulbound NFTs for gaming achievements be interesting to you?
I’ve been interested in NFT usecases outside of the typical make money/flipping use cases. I love the idea behind “soulbound NFTs” and think this could be a good use case for them.
The idea stems around the gamer receiving a “Soulbound” NFT for different achievements in the game. These are already defined in most games (think steam achievements) but will be given to your address in the form of an NFT.
My thought process is as follows:
There’s no standardized achievement platform across games or consoles. Steam has one, Xbox has their own, etc. (mobile doesn’t even really have one at all)
Many early adopters of crypto are gamers, which coincides nicely with a new Dapp.
Many of the games and platforms are unreliable, games go out of business, etc and all my progress is lost. On the blockchain this, in theory, should be around for sometime.
It would be cool to share, post, and grow a “gamer profile” across all the games and platforms.
Some potentially issues I’ve heard, and will address below:
It’s expensive to mint a new NFT for every achievement - yes I’m using an L2 for initial delivery, receiver can bridge to L1 if they’d like.
How are they untradable? - our online viewer invalidates (will remove from profile) NFTs that have moved from the original wallet. There will be a dispute process if the NFT needed to change hands due to a hack, etc.
How will you get the achievement data? - will have to work directly with the games to have our API called after a user has achieved something.
I currently have a fully functioning beta application built out including the API, contract, automated minting on L2, and profile page to browse NFT achievements.
Would love to hear peoples thoughts! Would you want NFT achievements? I’ve been debating if it’s worth continuing to build out so any feedback is appreciated.
