Bitcoin is always praised for its scarcity that is supposed to be make it one of the best currencies worldwide, until now we know that BTC will have a 21M coins in total no matter what happens in the whole universe and by now we already have 19M. But it seems like the figures we have been using to praise the scarcity are actually not practically correct. We all know the countless stories of people in earky days of Bitcoin losing their coins, like the famous person that even wants to search for his hard-drive in literal garbage and he is not the only case of that and this leads to many so-called Lost Coins, probably forever. Here we can see that the metric of Lost Coins and hodled coins has reached a 5-year high of over 7.6M BTC which is 36% of the total supply though this also includes just long-term held coins which can still move at a certain point but we can fully expect this metric to be in the millions as people in the early days had A LOT of BTC. So now, once anyone talks about BTC having a supply of 21M you should always remember that a considerable amount of that is lost forever and just makes the case of scarcity for Bitcoin even better.
