The qualities of money are:
Durability
Portability
Divisibility
Uniformity
Limited Supply
Acceptability
In all of these qualities, digital currency beats fiat. So, what’s stopping governments from eating their cake and having it too? Getting all of the benefits of the blockchain, while also propping up their own currency? Instead of playing up this pseudo war with crypto.
If the US were to cease creating any new dollars today and switched to some coin they created on the blockchain, the world would gravitate to the new coin. The same reputation, respect and F-16s backing the fiat money would transfer over to the digital currency.
Is it that the fiat system, as terrible as it is, allows for a corrupt political and wealth system to be propped up? If $5 billion goes missing today and disappears into some company’s pockets, it’s easy for the US government to ignore it. And for anyone else not to know about it. If this same behavior happened on the blockchain, because it’s public and anyone can follow the money, a lot of that shadiness and corruption would be made obvious. Basically, with the blockchain, everyone could play accountant and follow the money from the US government to CEO’s pockets, or corporations to politician’s pockets. The system crumbles.
Is this why governments, some governments anyway, do not want to transition into this new digital financial system? If not for corruption, what would explain their hesitancy?
