I'm an avid gamer and I've been thinking about the future of the industry. Where it's already headed, where it could go, what will happen to our favourite franchises etc.
Unfortunately for the best part of a decade we've seen large publishers shift toward milking their regular cash cows. They find what hits right with the masses (battle passes, skins, FUT etc) and keep people coming back. It's obviously brought huge growth in a lot of areas but it's clear the quality of these titles drops year-on-year. It's tough to see when you're passionate about games but luckily you can just avoid the churned out trash for the most part.
It has made me concerned though how these same publishers and developers will tackle the integration of blockchain elements as they become more commonplace. I was happy to see both EA and Ubisoft suffer the backlash for their poor attempts so far but it's inevitable they'll be coming back.
I'm keeping an open mind though as there's potential for new experiences and clever implementation. But overall I remain sceptical just because of the track records of certain companies.
What do you guys think? Bullish on the potential of it or do you think it's another loss of consumer faith waiting to happen?
Would also love to hear ideas or predictions how elements could be factored in.
