Let’s say Jonathan was an early adopter of Ethereum. Let’s say he had 100ETH, on the original chain, but he wasn’t a victim of the hack.
After the hard fork, Jonathan will retain his 100ETH on the new chain, and also have 100ETC on the classic chain.
Therefore, Jonathan now has 200ETH (or the fiat equivalent). I must be missing something here.
